Play possum – English Idiom – Online English Lessons

To play possum is to pretend to ignorant, asleep, ill, or dead in order to deceive somebody or to avoid trouble.

This idiom has its origin in the habit of the opossum of pretending to be dead when it is attacked by a predator.

Example of use:

He’s not asleep. He’s just playing possum because he doesn’t want to tidy his bedroom.
